𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗽 - 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀

A great exercise with many benefits including:
✅ Rounding the back, flexion and extension of the lumbosacral junciton and hindlimb reach
✅ Strengthening the back and hindquarters
✅ Strengthening the muscles involved in supporting and raising the forehand
✅ Recruiting & toning the abdominal muscles, hip flexors & the spinal flexor muscle chain
✅ Improving agility and coordination
✅ Reducing back stiffness

Raising the poles alters the footfalls of the canter, causing the diagonal pair to dissociate, resutling in your horse rocking between the fore and hind legs.

𝗧𝘂𝗲𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗧𝗶𝗽 - 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝗽𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀

This great in-hand exercise encourages and improves:
🔹 Lateral suppleness
🔹 Core control
🔹 Coordination
🔹 Proprioception

As you walk your horse on the serpentine between the poles he must bring his hind and front legs closer together to negotiate the grid - core muscles are recruited and the back is rounded.

𝗙𝗥𝗜𝗗𝗔𝗬 𝗙𝗔𝗖𝗧

Horses have a highly developed sense of 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 that’s well outside our range and allows your horse to monitor the world around him.

Horses hear higher pitched sounds than we do and will often stand listening in a stance of heightened awareness.

Sound waves travel as vibrations in the air and are picked up by your horse’s large mobile ears which can be used independently rather like antennae. As well as directing sound, they also indicate emotion.

Often when being ridden, one ear is directed towards the rider – this indicates concentration.

If the ears are pricked your horse is alert
If they fall sideways they indicate relaxation
If pinned flat back indicate aggression

Friday Fact - Your horse's vision

The eye is set on the side of the head. This allows for a 340 degree arc of peripheral vision meaning even when his head is facing forward, your horse can detect movement almost around all of his body.

The eyeball is protected by a bony socket called the orbit. This is made up of several bones, contains muscles, nerves, blood vessels and ducts that produce and drain tears.

Monocular vision allows your horse to focus independently with each eye - and binocular vision allows him to judge distance.

To focus, your horse needs to move his head. This is especially important when he's approaching a jump, where he needs to lift his head to assess the height and depth of the jump.

Riding your horse in an over flexed position reduces his field of vision. He has no forward view in front of him, and is forced to proceed blind and put all his trust in his rider.

An interesting read but very informative. Still looking for a couple of case studies for sports massage- pre and post event (could be a strenuous schooling session not necessarily a competition) and then a follow up 5-7 days later.
