Great day at DogFest today ๐ถ
Highlight for me was watching Nicci Hindson demonstrating healwork to music with both Elsa, the dog she won ๐ at Crufts with and her younger dog who is in this video.
This is the perfect example of a great working relationship ๐ฅฐ

Today we were looking at a potential venue for group classes..... I'm going to say this one is a "no" given the amount of mud ๐ฎ
Teddy did one lap and wanted to get back in the car ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ
But at least George had fun ๐คฉ
Follow this page for updates about future group classes ๐
Is your dog over excited before you even start your walk?
Do you find your dogs brain is already at the park ๐ฟ๐๐ฅ๐ as you leave the front door?
Bringing your dog's brain back to the here and now can help lower the excitement level and make your walk a much calmer, pleasant experience ๐
Here you can see George playing "2 paws on" a great game for brining your dog back to the present and engaging with you rather than predicting what's going to happen on the walk the walk ๐คฉ๐๐ฟ๐ฅ๐๐พ

Middle is a great game for building value in Proximity as well as Focus on you.
We call this type game a conversation starter and this is the type of game I will use to start training sessions and walks, to make sure my dogs are fully engaged with me ๐คฉ๐
Here you can see Teddy showing you how to play Middle and you can see how focused he is on me, even when the neighbours dog starts barking ๐ฅณ๐คฉ๐
Would you like your dog to be focused on you when you are on walks. Especially when there are other dogs ๐, cats ๐ or that pesky squirrel ๐ฟ makes an appearance ๐คฉ
Have a go at playing this game and post pictures of your dog in Middle ๐คฉ๐๐พ

Building your relationship with your dog gives you a trusting bond where your dog is happy to work with you ๐
Here you can see George showing off his favourite game, Middle ๐ถ
Not only does George find this game very rewarding, its also great for building Optimism and when on walks it's the perfect position to keep him out of trouble ๐คฉ

keep on learining
Learning new skills is important for dogs of all ages but is particularly important for older dogs to keep their brain and body active and flexible.
George is 7 years old next month and will be officially classed as a senior dog!!!
Some of his favourite games are Middle, Magic Hand and Paws On, these games are great for building the concepts of Optimism, Confidence and Focus which are some of the key skills needed to develop loose lead walking ๐คฉ
In this video we are continuing his learning by combining all 3 games to teach Middle with paws on my feet before we start learning to walk with his paws on my feet ๐คฉ๐ฅณ๐
These games and more are in the Stop Pulling Mini Course available for just ยฃ27 available on this link ๐คฉ

Loose Lead Walking
Does your dog pull like a train when you go for a walk?
Dogs pull on lead for a number of reasons, including:
โ they naturally walk faster than us ๐
โ they are excited about going for a walk ๐ฅณ
โ they are thinking about being in the park as soon as you leave the front door, or even as soon as they see the lead ๐ฟ ๐ณ
โ they naturally pull against the pressure of the lead ๐โ๐ฆบ
Some of the ways concept training helps to overcome pulling are:
โก build value in being close to you ๐
โก make you more exciting than the enviroment, bye bye squirrel ๐ฟ
โก teach concepts to keep your dogs brain in the here and now with you, rather than already in the park playing with their pals ๐ฅณ
โก teach them when they feel pressure on the lead to orient back to you ๐ฅฐ
In the video George is showing off his loose lead walking skills ๐ถ ๐พ ๐

Best way to learn
Concept training uses games to teach your dog the skills they need to deal with everything life throws at them ๐คฉ
In this video George is practising the skill of thinking when excited.... Teddy decided it was far too much running around and just sat and watched ๐คฃ๐คฃ๐คฃ

Thinking when excited and disengagement
Can your dog think when they are excited?
For the 3rd video in this series, we start to add in some disengagement skills as well as the ability to think when excited ๐คช๐ฅณ๐คฏ
George struggled a bit with this level and definitly needs to practice more disengagement games ๐คฉ

building real world ability to think when excited
Can your dog still think when excited?
Following on from yesterday's video, here you can see we are really building the excitement level in the game.
Practicing at this level of excitement means that the skill is more "real life" ready. That squirrel is amazingly exciting - flashing his tail ๐ฟ so we need to teach our dogs to think when they are at that level of excitement so that when they hear you call them, the instruction actually gets through to their brain ๐คช๐คฏ

fetch and thinking when excited
Can your dog still think when they get excited? ๐ฅณ๐คฏ
Or are the lights on but no-one's home ๐คช๐คฏ๐
If you struggle to get your dog to listen and follow direction when they are over excited, teaching them to think when their arousal level is higher is the key ๐
Here you can see George practicing this skill with his favourite toys, tennis balls ๐ฅ๐๐ถ

Building on the value for proximity is a great way to make you a better deal than the enviroment ๐คฉ๐ฅณ

training session 2
Teaching your dog that the best deal is always with you rather than the enviroment is the first step to loose lead walking and off lead freedom ๐ฅณ
Here is the 2nd in a series of videos showing a training session with George and we are playing Orientation Game ๐คฉ
Marking the point he turns back to me and rewarding by throwing a piece of food in the opposite direction. Even throwing towards the road, George knows I always give the best deal so he orients back to me everytime ๐คฉ๐

training session 1
When you first start training your dog, it's in your home with few distractions.
To progress to real life ready you need to move to a slightly more distracting environment but still make sure to set your dog up for success ๐ฅณ
Here's the 1st of a series of videos of a training session with George on my driveway.
Game 1: Boundary games
You can see the value George has for being on his boundary (bed) and this value can be transferred to anything you find in your enviroment. Such as a tree stump, a park bench, a man hole cover, or even a cloth or towel you carry, the options are only limited by your imagination ๐คฉ
