W H Y W A L K T O G E T H E R ?

This past Social Sunday, our pack hit the trails for one of our favorite features of our monthly workshops - our eagerly awaited social walk! 🌳🐕

These outings are more than just an average walk; they’re a chance for our dogs to learn and grow together in a relaxed, supportive environment.

While it may look like a simple walk, there’s a lot going on beneath the surface. By walking together, without the pressure to interact, our dogs become more comfortable and confident in the presence of other dogs.

This helps them build the skills they need to stay calm and focused, even when other dogs are around. It’s all about creating a peaceful, happy experience for everyone—both humans and dogs alike!

Thanks to everyone who joined us and helped to make a fantastic Social Sunday. We can’t wait to see you on the next one! 🐕🖤

Want to join in on our next Social Walk? DM for more info

M E E T T H E T E A M

Hey there, I’m Hannah, Head Trainer at TREK ‘N’ TRAIN. With over 15 years of experience in the dog training industry, my deep-seated passion for all things canine has been the driving force behind my career. This love for dogs led me to become a Qualified Veterinary Nurse, starting in a first opinion practice and working my way up to working in a busy referral hospital, nursing more critical patients.

My background spans over a wide range of training areas, including agility, obedience, body-conditioning, scent work, heel-work, dancing to music, fly-ball and gun dog work, each contributing to a comprehensive and enriching approach to training as a whole. If it involves dogs, I’ve probably done it! Out of all the areas, agility holds a special place in my life. Competing at a high level for a number of years has provided exciting challenges and deepened the bond with my dogs.

My passion for all things dog extends to a deep-rooted interest in holistic health and nutrition. I approach dog care with a comprehensive perspective, using tools and techniques from various disciplines to provide the very best preventative health and behavioural care. I believe every dog is unique and celebrate their differences, always adapting my approach to the individual needs of each dog. Through my work, I feel lucky to be a part of each dog and owner’s training journey and appreciate all the lessons we learn together along the way.

In addition to my extensive experience, I’m also a qualified Canine Myotherapist. This specialty allows me to address muscle-related issues in dogs, helping them recover from injuries, improve mobility, and enhance overall well-being through targeted therapy and rehabilitation.

I’ve been part of the TREK ‘N’ TRAIN team from the very beginning, and the journey has been incredible. I share my home with, my two lively spaniels Tilly and Macey, along with my newest agility prodigy Fizz the Border Collie, they’re always keeping me on my toes and continually remind me of the joys and challenges of dog training.

My mission at TREK 'N' TRAIN is to help dog owners build strong, positive relationships with their pets through effective and compassionate training methods. Whether you’re new to dog training or looking to refine your skills, I’m here to support you and your canine every step of the way.

See you around,

Hannah

M E E T T H E T E A M

Hey there, I'm Gina, and I've been immersed in the veterinary world for over 15 years now. It's been quite the journey, from late-night care shifts nursing poorly pets, to handling cases independently in referral hospitals across the North West. Alongside my clinical work, I've had the privilege of mentoring aspiring veterinary professionals at the University of Liverpool's Small Animal Teaching Hospital, specialising in ICU nursing.

Beyond veterinary medicine, my heart lies in canine behaviour and training. Back in 2020, I decided to put my skills to the test by rehoming Leo, my gentle giant XL Bully X Mastiff. He came into my life as an overgrown, excitable adolescent, and it's been incredible witnessing his transformation into the well-balanced canine companion he is today. I owe a lot of that success to consistent, reward-based, and ethical training methods.

I'm a proud member of the IMDT (Institute of Modern Dog Trainers) and currently working towards a Level 4 Advanced Canine Behaviour Diploma. Whether I'm in my nurse scrubs, educating professionals or helping pet parents train their dogs, my enthusiasm for advocating for our canine friends shines through. And yes, you'll be seeing a lot more of Leo on our adventures, but don't worry if you see him in his muzzle – it's just a precaution due to some new laws.

I'm truly grateful to be able to do what I love and make a positive impact in the lives of animals and their humans alike.

Peace out,

Gina

Can’t contain our excitement for this book release this spring 🤓

If you’re wanting to get your teeth into something, keep your eyes peeled for this one 👀 or even check out The Forever Dog ‘s first book, it’s already an international bestseller and a thought provoking read 📖

These guys are pioneering the way we feed our dogs 🙌 Thank you Dr. Karen Becker & Rodney Habib Pet Health Media for leading the change 👏🏽

If you’re all about preventative healthcare and getting the most years possible with your canine, this is a great place to start 💪🏽🧬

Promise you won’t be disappointed, although should come with a warning - your dog’s mealtimes will never be the same 🍖🥬🦴

🐾 60 days until our longevity recipe book is available to pet lovers, worldwide🥳❣️This makes me ecstatic for two reasons. As a wellness veterinarian, I know diet and immediate living environment are the biggest factors for creating exceptional health, delaying aging and avoiding degenerative disease for all species (people and pets). It breaks my heart that most pets eat ultra-processed dog or cat food their whole lives, giving them little hope of experiencing a thriving, resilient microbiome or having access to the antioxidants, polyphenols and bioactives found in real foods that are needed to create exceptional wellbeing.
Many dogs and cats are accustomed to chronic symptoms and not feeling their best 💔, but this book brings new hope, especially for pet parents that don’t know where to start, feel overwhelmed or want step-by-step directions that point the way to better bowls and healthier homes. Our animal’ bodies know how to heal themselves, given the right tools and environment. This book offers an easy-to-follow template the world really needs right now.
The second reason I’m so excited about this book is for fellow pet parents that need a resource for hope. It’s my rescue dog, Homer, on the cover of this book 🤎🖤. We adopted Homer as a sad, homeless, geriatric with a list of chronic health issues. Any guardian that has an ailing animal knows that feeling of desperation and urgency, wanting to do anything and everything to help our beloveds feel better, emotionally and physically. We’re desperate for a reparative plan, a thoughtful protocol that covers all of principles needed to reverse the downhill slide, and prevent further degeneration from occurring. It was this feeling that inspired the title of this book, a L.I.F.E. strategy to better health; Lifestyle, Ideal microbiome, Food, Environment & stress.
Thank you, Homer, for inspiring such a special book. There are millions of animals around the world, just like you, that can have a second chance at health and happiness because their guardians now have a path forward🌟Www.foreverdoglife.com

Last week we paid a visit to one of our TREK ‘N’ TRAINERS, Sparky, who’s recently been on maternity leave to raise her ten puppies - it was so great meeting them all 🫶🏼

Kudos to Sparky's fantastic owners for their exceptional care and dedication from start to finish, they’ve really gone above and beyond 👏🏽

As a dog trainer and vet nurse, I can’t emphasise enough the importance of finding a responsible breeder before welcoming a puppy into your family 🐾

The breeding world is a minefield, with lots of backyard breeders and those who’s focus is on generating income. Here’s a few essential points of things to look out for in a breeder when choosing a puppy:

👊🏽 Prioritising Responsibility: The foundation of a healthy, happy pup begins with a responsible breeder. Look for breeders who prioritise the health and well-being of their dogs above all else. This means adhering to ethical standards and providing a nurturing environment for both parent dogs and puppies.

🦠 Health Screening and Genetic Testing: A reputable breeder will conduct comprehensive health screenings and genetic tests on their breeding dogs to identify and mitigate the risk of hereditary diseases and health issues. By prioritising health and genetic diversity, responsible breeders contribute to the overall vitality and longevity of the breed.

🧬 Temperament Matters: Beyond physical health, the temperament and behaviour of a pup are equally important considerations. Seek out breeders who carefully select breeding pairs based on temperament traits, aiming to produce dogs with stable, predictable personalities, preventing behavioural issues developing later down the line.

🦮 Socialisation and Early Development: The early weeks of a pup's life are critical for their socialisation and development. Choose breeders who prioritise socialization experiences and provide a stimulating, enriching environment that fosters confidence and adaptability in their puppies.

🎗️ Lifetime Support and Education: A reputable breeder doesn't just hand over a puppy and call it a day. Look for breeders who offer ongoing support, guidance, and resources to new owners. This includes assistance with training, health care advice, and a commitment to being a lifelong resource for any questions or concerns that may arise.

👁️ Transparency and Accessibility: Trustworthy breeders are transparent about their breeding practices and readily share information about the lineage, health history, and care protocols of their dogs. They welcome enquiries and encourage prospective owners to visit their facilities to witness first-hand the conditions in which their puppies are raised.

Wishing all the best to the pups heading off to their new homes and enjoy the rest bite Sparky (and owners!), you’ve done such a great job 🖤

If you need help in finding the right breeder, don’t hesitate to get in touch ✋🏼🐾

M E E T T H E T E A M

I'm Ell, the proud founder of TREK 'N' TRAIN, where passion for dogs meets professional expertise. As a Registered Veterinary Nurse with a deep-seated love for all things canine, I've dedicated my career to ensuring the well-being and happiness of our dogs. I have a keen interest in Canine Nutrition, geeking out on the latest advancements in canine diets, health and wellbeing. This extends over to the human side also. I love to spend time in my kitchen, baking and preparing whole food deliciousness for family and friends, doggos too! I’m a firm believer that food is the key to health and as a result gives us the opportunity to increase longevity and subsequently spend many more years together.

I’m committed to continuous learning and professional development, a proud member of The IMDT (Institute of Modern Dog Trainers) and hold an Accredited Certification in the 'Principles of Dog Training and Behaviour' at Level 3, soon to be finishing my Level 4 Advanced Canine Behaviour Diploma. Alongside my Veterinary Nursing Qualification, this comprehensive training equips me with the knowledge and skills necessary to understand canine behaviour intricately and to tailor training programs that meet the individual needs of each dog and their owner.

But beyond the professional realm, onto more important things, I share my home with my two dogs, Deefor and Ember. Deefor (on the left) was the main driver for setting up TREK ’N’ TRAIN, the perfect companion, a true testament to reward based and ethical training, I wanted to help other owners in finding that special bond, every dog and owner deserve to have. Ember (on the right), is a ex-cypriot hunting dog who we rehomed mid 2023, she had a real hard time adjusting to pet dog life, but through kindness and consistency, she’s well on her way to being a fully fledged TREK ’N’ TRAINER. For me, it’s a privilege to work with her, and there’s nothing more rewarding than rehabilitating a rescue dog that hasn’t had the best of starts.

When we’re not out TREK ’N’ TRAINing you’ll find us out and about delving deeper into the world of all things dog, competing in canicross races, training agility, man-trailing, alongside taking part in workshops and classes. We love to get out on adventuring, the longer and further afield the better, enjoying the great outdoors and find settling in a pub afterwards for a well deserved Sunday dinner and glass of wine, dogs resting at our feet, is just as fulfilling.

At TREK 'N' TRAIN, we believe in fostering harmonious relationships between humans and their canines through compassionate training methods. We all want a dog that we can take anywhere and enjoy the wonders of life with. Whether you're looking to address behavioural issues, embark on puppy training, or simply deepen the bond with your dog, I'm here to guide you every step of the way.

Over and out,

Ell

Beginning 2024 as enthusiastic as Deefor is for having his photo taken 😂 (FYI - we had a slippery bench that day 🫠)

We want to take this opportunity to thank all our clients, old and new for supporting our small business, whether that’s through our trekking or training services. You enable us to grow and ultimately, enable us to help more dogs and their owners. We’ve been a little quiet recently as we’ve been busy behind the scenes, working on lots of amazing projects for the year ahead. Although we’re more than excited for what we have in store, we shouldn’t overlook the growth and progress we’ve made over the past year.

Alongside the amazing adventures we’ve been on with our TREK ‘N’ TRAINERS (really is the best job in the world), we’ve grown substantially on the training front, through our one-to-one training sessions and online courses. We’ve started providing education to veterinary teams on how we can improve veterinary visits for our canines. We’re looking forward to working with more vet practices in the North West, helping to reduce stress in patients and everyone else involved!

In March, we gained another family member, Ember. She has already taught me so much, our journey up to now has been far from plain-sailing. We are still getting to know one another and strengthening our bond, she continues to teach me lessons in patience, understanding, problem solving and ultimately developing my skills as a dog trainer. When she’ll be a fully fledged TREK ‘N’ TRAINER, is debatable as we’re nowhere near getting that perfect recall or loose lead walking - for now that’s not as important as her building her trust in me her guardian & we’re very much enjoying the journey!

We’re back out Canicrossing, turns out Ember is the perfect running companion, she pulls like a train, and we can’t wait to get out competing this year. I’ve been broadening my knowledge on scent work, movement puzzles, free-work, predation substitution training and have found a passion for man trailing. We’ve started agility with both Ember and Deefor, something they’re both loving and a new area of training for me also. Not to mention, the dogs got to meet Santa Paws, apparently you won’t find any canines on the naughty list, as all dogs are good boys and girls!

We’ve attended numerous IMDT workshops, learning and networking with other fantastic trainers - our profession can be lonely at times! Looking forward to working alongside some of you in the year ahead. Continuing work towards gaining more qualifications, still beavering away at a Level 4 Advanced Canine Behaviour Diploma and working towards accreditation through the KCAI scheme. All of this alongside the endless amount of canine related seminars, webinars, book reading and podcast listening, constantly expanding that all important knowledge, there’s always time for learning.

And finally, I want to give a heartfelt thank you to both Gina and Hannah, which I am so grateful to have in our TREK ‘N’ TRAIN tribe, they’ve been with us since day one. I am so grateful of the support you give to me, physically, mentally, and emotionally - and not to mention the compassionate care you give to every single dog that gets to work with you, we are very lucky.

Wow, well that ended up incredibly long. It’s humbling to read back. If you’ve made it this far, well done!

Peace out 2023, bring on 2024 ✌🏼🐾✋🏼

• A HEARTFELT ‘THANK YOU’ TO THE WHOLE TEAM AT SANDYMOOR VETS •

Recently Ember, had to go into the vets for a sedation and exploratory procedure after coming into some trouble with a piece of grass that became lodged in the back of her throat.

Naturally, I was anxious about taking her into the vets, considering it was her first vet visit since arriving in the UK. We’ve been working hard on building her confidence in new environments and, in an ideal world, I would have liked her first experience at a new vets to be a positive one, minimally invasive and as stress-free as possible. As we all know, life doesn’t always work out the way we plan.

We’ve been practicing canine handling skills at home, prepping her for veterinary examination and familiarising procedures, which paid off during her first examination. We made sure to take lots of tasty treats to keep the experience as nice as possible. We opted for symptomatic medical treatment overnight, and after no improvement by the following morning we decided to take her back in for further investigations.

Much to our delight, upon arrival, Ember was super keen to get back into the practice, excited to see the staff and get lots of fuss - she clearly had enjoyed her visit the previous day. The pesky blade of grass was successfully removed and after a little time recovering from her sedation, we were back to collect her. Our happy girl, still wagging her tail made sure she got some more fuss from her new friends before we made our way back home.

We can't express our gratitude enough to the wonderful team Sandymoor Vets for taking care of our Ember so exceptionally well. Knowing she's in the care of such dedicated professionals gives us such peace of mind. Thank you for being our trusted partners in our pet's health and well-being.

We’ll be back in soon for a ‘nice’ visit and to make sure Ember maintains her positive associations with the vets, making those inevitable, trickier visits seem not so bad!

Careful preparation and management are crucial in reducing stress for our pets during veterinary visits. How do you help support your pets through their veterinary examinations? 👇🏼

HAPPY HOWL-OWEEN FROM THIS SPOOKY TRIO 🦇

As Halloween dawns, it is yet another year, and for some of our sensitive pets, it makes a daunting week - debatably a couple of months! Kicking off with Halloween, bonfire night soon after, then Xmas & NY, all posing their unique challenges. As a veterinary nurse and dog trainer, here are some recommendations for navigating the upcoming season with a sensitive pet:

🚪If your pet is uncomfortable around strangers, consider putting up a sign on your door asking people not to knock. If you still want to participate in trick or treat festivities, leave a bowl of sweets at your gate or the end of your drive, far from the front door.

🎶 Play some music or brown noise to mask the any increased outdoor sounds and keep your dog engaged with a chew toy, kong, or other enrichment activities.

🌑Take your dog for a walk before it gets dark, as people in strange outfits can startle even the most confident dogs.

⛺️ Ensure your pet's safe space is set up and easily accessible. Using products like Petremedy & ADAPTIL can be beneficial when plugged in around these areas.

🎃 While costumes might seem great fun, they are the exception rather than the norm for most pets. Think twice before dressing up your canine. If you do, make sure to look out for any subtle signs of stress and anxiety.
