Sandal Scandal 🥿

Bella came to see AREC after deciding her owner’s sandal was not just a chew toy - but a tasty snack!

We induced vomiting and, luckily, Bella returned the shoe in pieces. Our team had to play "Sandal Jigsaw" to ensure no sole was left behind. It was quite the pawsle!

We hope Bella makes a full recovery and that her taste in designer shoes gets booted 👠✨

Thank you to Bella and her family for letting us share her story.

💅Time for a trim💅

Poor 5-year-old Busta split one of his dew claws earlier this week. While they may seem superficial, this injury can be extremely painful for dogs and often requires surgery to remove the entire claw.

Luckily for Busta, with a bit of sedation and some gentle trimming, he only needed the visible keratin nail trimmed away. He went home with some medication and a fancy collar to boot.

❓ What are dew claws? ❓
A dew claw on a dog is a nail (claw) attached to a short toe on the inside of the leg that does not touch the ground.

FUN FACT:
How many toes does a dog have? 18! Dogs have four weight-bearing toes on each foot and two dew claws.

Thank you to Busta and his family for letting us share his story!

Toadie Rebecchi - you're off the hook! 🪝🐟

The real bad guy is the Toadfish (aka Pufferfish or blowfish), along with their longer-spined relatives the porcupine fish, are found all the way around Australia's coastline.

The potentially lethal toxin they contain — tetrodotoxin — is found on their skin and internal organs.

Bentley is an adventurous 5-year-old Border Collie who took an unexpected dive into the world of pufferfish. Despite their tempting appearance, these fish pack a deadly toxin called tetrodotoxin, which can be more lethal than cyanide.

At first your dog may seem fine, but without treatment paralysis can soon set in. As a result the first 24 hours of hospitalisation is critical.

Thankfully Bentley's owners brought him straight to AREC. Fortunately, Bentley's owners brought him straight to AREC where he was given critical life support through mechanical ventilation, and he made a full recovery 🫶

A big thank you to Bentley's owners for letting us share this story. Wishing them all the best from the team at AREC.

If you are ever concerned about your pet coming into contact with a Pufferfish - please call us immediately on 4957 7106 for advice.

STICKY SITUATION: Beautiful, brave Luna visited AREC recently after she impaled herself on the stick she was chasing. Luckily the stick was easily removed in surgery with no deeper structures affected. Luna was discharged on the same day and is on the mend 💗

Which pup has a few Twix up their furry sleeves?

🕵️ The crime scene: Tuesday night. A room full of empty chocolate wrappers. 3 x cute but guilty faces.

Luckily Samm has ways of making dogs talk (well their tummies anyway!).

The 'chocolate retriever' culprit? Miss Willow.

We can now report all pups are home safe, well and choccie free. Thank you to Diesel, Willow and Ollie's clever family for rushing them to AREC and letting us share their story.

🍫 What's the big problem with chocolate?

Today we wish farewell to our beautiful nurse Jada 😿

Jada has been working with us over the past few months to gain experience in the general practice world of Veterinary Care, while enrolled in a traineeship at AREC. It has been a privilege to experience her intelligence, compassion and care 🩵 Her bright personality and contagious smile uplifts the whole team every Monday. Although our Monday’s will not be the same without her, we wish her the best of luck throughout her nursing journey 🩺

"I rushed my dog, Oakah, to AREC late at night after she became unresponsive.

The staff were prompt and efficient in triaging my dog and taking her into care. The vet provided a thorough explanation of what was happening and the treatment options. We left her in their care to provide her with treatment and surgery overnight.

I was provided with regular updates throughout the night and was allowed to spend time with her over the coming days whilst she recovered, which lifted both of our spirits. Upon discharge, we were provided with all the necessary aftercare information and medication.

The vets, nursing staff and receptionists were all lovely and provided outstanding care to Oakah. They treated her and us with empathy and respect and I would highly recommend their services to any animal owner in an emergency.

We cannot thank everyone enough for saving our baby and bringing her back home to us ♥️"

Shared via Google Review.

Thank you to Oakah and her family for sharing these kind words. Our team wishes Oakah a speedy recovery filled with lots of cuddles and TLC 💕
