Love this - it’s so true!

I know walks can be adapted so that shade and water is involved (which I often see people mention) but more often than not you’ll be in shorts and a T-shirt so what might feel cool for you isn’t for our dogs with their fur coats. Coupled with the fact they often do double the amount of steps as us on walks! Or added struggles like flat faced or long haired breeds. 🥵☀️

(Not sure who to credit for this but important to share!)

From this week I am no longer taking on new clients! 😱😬 This has been a really hard decision for me to wrap my head around as I love meeting and helping owners and their dogs but it’s going to be the best next step in slowing down (famous last words!)

I ended up in hospital last week with severe pain, then just after that sadly my grandad passed away and then the next day our house purchase fell through (they say these things come in threes) so it’s pushed me to decide at 6 months pregnant its time I stop trying to do it all. As much as this decision makes me sad its not forever and I have to put baby boy first and not dogs for once (what a weird thing to say 😅)

I’ll still be supporting my current clients though up until they no longer need me! ❤️

Happy birthday to the main man himself! 🥹🐶 We’ve been through SO much together (including 7 house moves 🙃) I cry thinking about how much this dog means to me and how much of a support he’s been without even knowing ✨

He’s not always the easiest boy (and he’s taught me to never get another flat faced breed again in my life 😂) but I wouldn’t change him for the world ♥️ Love you Ronnie boy.

Got to see this lovely lady today for some loose lead walking practice. I first met her and her owners at my reactivity classes last summer, fast forward to now and we’re doing training sessions that aren’t focused on her reactivity - they’re even going on social walks with other dogs now (see messages on the next slide!) - the difference is unbelievable! So proud of all of their hard work 🤩

FINALLY some glorious weather for my clients and I to train in today, it felt like Spring out there! 🌸☀️

This guy just finished up our Puppy Programme (would you believe he’s still a puppy?!) and the improvements were clear to see at our last session today. He finds it tricky to not greet everything and everyone (hello goldie genes!) and this came across as lunging and barking - something you really want to nip in the bud early!

But today in a PACKED park he really showed how far he has come with making good choices. Way to go pup 🌟🧡

🧡 Rhubarb appreciation 🧡 Nothing training related but feeling very grateful for this girl today. For those that know how difficult life was with my previous girly Willow with her severe reactivity and aggression, they will understand what a breath of fresh air Rhu is.

Not particularly interested in people or dogs she doesn’t know, but happy to exist in and outside the home with them, the cuddliest soppiest baby with people she does know, a quick learner, loves to play - she is turning into such a lovely dog and long may it continue!

What a brilliant way to end the year! 🥰 This girl has been a really complex case…From a kill shelter in Spain to starting to enjoy life with her new family.

As much as this is a thank you for me, the success wouldn’t be possible without the consistency, commitment and effort of the clients themselves. I will always be here to support and guide but we can’t make you follow through with the training, which is often where we see a lack of progress. So messages like these are SO lovely to receive 🥲✨

Training your dog doesn’t always have to be in fixed ‘sessions’ instead try weaving teaching skills into your weeks, in little and often slots. This way it will feel more manageable and accomplishable! Think of what you’re teaching as ‘kettle skills’…☕️ Broken down skills or cues you can teach in the time it takes to boil the kettle…or do both at the same time! Win win 😅⏰⏳

I’ve been learning a lot more about functional behaviour analysis lately and how we can make use of these in behaviour modification plans and treatment.

If you’re working with a trainer for behavioural issues they should be thinking about the function of behaviour and whether that’s for: attention, escape, access, or a sensory need.

If they try to just stop the behaviour happening without delving into these questions (and lots more!) then you may want to find another reputable trainer or behaviourist to work with instead 🙂

BUG BEAR ALERT ‼️

I see owners and trainers alike that teach ‘loose lead walking’ but then don’t allow their dogs one step in front of them and then correct them if they move a foot out of line.

Loose lead walking is exactly what it says on the tin - loose! That means as long as your dog isn’t pulling, they can walk in front of you, next to you, they can also sniff or stop to look at something if they like! 🦮

Now this isn’t a post telling you to never say no to your dog again BUT telling our dogs ‘no’ doesn’t give them much direction and without clear communication we’re setting them up for failure 🤷🏼‍♀️

I’ll give you an example…Yesterday Ronnie went to take a sock from the clothes dryer my initial thought was to say to him ‘no’ but that wasn’t going to help him learn. I thought about the whole picture…I’d been working and studying so it was late, he hadn’t had a walk or dinner and was getting a bit restless and so was finding himself things to do. Instead of ‘no’ I asked him to get one of his toys and bring it to me so we could play (not in so many words!). Success! Sock theft averted! 🧦🎉

One week of Rhu ✨

I wanted to share what our first week together has looked like…This comes with a HUGE ⚠️ that this won’t look the same for everyone and trainers may suggest different things based on lifestyle and future plans for the dog. I think the most noticeable thing is a lack of formal ‘training’ or ‘obedience’, instead focusing on ‘life skills’.

* Met another dog (Ronnie)
* Learnt her name (via recall games)
* Harness desensitisation
* Learnt marker word (‘Yes’)
* Car ride in the day & night
* Visited the vets
* Visited a shop
* Began teaching ‘Leave It’
* Learnt ‘Sit’
* Clipper and Dremel desensitisation
* Handling & grooming desensitisation (paws, ears, teeth)
* Traffic desensitisation
* Met multiple people (both men & women)
* Listened to firework and other noise sound effects playlist

Your dog gets two one hour walks a day? But they’ve still got behavioural problems? I hear this a lot!

‘I don’t understand it, they get multiple long walks everyday. I don’t know why they’re acting like this! They should be tired’

My answer is always: quality over quantity.

It’s great you’re exercising your dog! But are those walks fulfilling to them?

Are they getting opportunities…
- To sniff?
- To play?
- To practice their breed traits? (If you’re not sure what these are then drop me a message!)
To run?
To use their brains?

If the walks consist of twice round the same path or residential area each day take a look at some of things I’ve suggested that you can incorporate into your dogs walks that can help! 🐶🐾

I'm SO excited that I'll be offering a one-off course of puppy classes with 6 spaces up for grabs starting in October!

As a lot of you know, a large amount of my cases and client based is around reactivity and as I'm studying behaviour this is where my expertise lie...so I don't often get the opportunity to dedicate my time to PUPPIEEES. But within my family they'll be a new addition joining soon so these classes have the added bonus of seeing exactly what I'd do (and wouldn't do!) with a new pup that'll be very close to my heart 😃

Please note, classes are within an outdoor private field, so not in a hall and pups up to 20 weeks can attend.

Message or WhatsApp to book a space.

The difference a week makes! Last weeks reactive to relaxed class in the pouring rain (with two dogs missing!), whereas last nights class we were training in the beautiful sunshine. That’s the great British summer for you! 😅

11/08/2023

It’s so satisfying when you can tell clients have been putting in the work! This guy was one of the strongest pullers I’ve ever seen, so much so he couldn’t even be walked on a Halti head collar, alongside some pretty intense reactivity and look where we are today! 💪🏼

One of the things I love about this video is how ‘imperfect’ it is. There’s no forced heel, he’s able to sniff, his eyes aren’t on glued on me, he’s able to slow and speed up his pace but he’s engaged, holding a loose lead walk. And this represents real life, which is what living with our dogs is all about! Doing the ‘normal’ stuff!

I’ve now finished his walk and train programme (4 sessions) alongside some 121s. This doesn’t mean the training is over, his owners will still need to stay consistent with his training but I have every faith they’ll keep at it 😅

The first Reactive to Relaxed course finished at the beginning of July! ✅ I’ve received some lovely feedback and it makes me so happy to be able to see and hear about the changes taking place across the classes. The next course is nearly finished and the August course is fully booked but there’s still space for September 🐶☺️

As The Capable Canine Company grows it’s really shown that I need to change how I currently structure the business. Behind the scenes I’ve been continuing my professional development, from my Level 5 Dogenius course to IMDT courses, being part of the Grisha Stewart Academy to making my way through a giant reading list, all alongside helping my clients.

With my knowledge continuing to grow it’s time to start pushing away some of that imposter syndrome and giving myself some credit! I’ve been extremely modest with my pricing up until now, including helping for free those that weren’t able to pay but long term that’s not sustainable and it doesn’t do justice to the time and effort I’ve put into my learning.

I also want to build a client base that are happy to invest in seeing change in their dogs behaviour. There are no quick fixes (unfortunately!) so it’s important my clients understand how key consistency is when working with dogs.

As part of these changes some training programmes have been added to the website which i’m really excited about!

From the ‘Honey, i’m home!’ puppy programme to the ‘Help! My dog is…’ behaviour programme there is something for everyone. There are even remote sessions available! ☺️

And a big thank you to all my clients, past and present for trusting me with your dogs and allowing me to be the behaviour geek I am 🤣🤓

I’m VERY excited to announce the start of The Capable Canines ‘Reactive to Relaxed’ classes 🐶

This is something I’ve been planning for a while now and so happy to finally roll it out. There seems to be a gap in classes for the reactive dogs. We’ve got our puppy classes, advanced, agility, obedience. But what about those that want to work on reactivity around dogs in a controlled environment with a trained professional? This four week class will give you the techniques and knowledge needed to support with your reactivity journey. Due to the nature of this class it’s restricted to four dogs at a time. I am also going to open up a waiting list for the next few courses. Let’s get going! 💪🏼

What’s better than one dog? Easy answer: TWO 🐶😅

Multi-dog households are definitely harder work but when you’ve got your training foundations in place with your first dog its so much more enjoyable when you add the second (or third, or fourth) 😅 Hands up if you have a multi-dog household 🙋🏼‍♀️
